Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has vowed that his administration will not repeat the mistakes of past governments, pledging to uphold justice, strengthen the rule of law, and deepen judicial independence in the state.
According to his Chief Press Secretary Owaen Fred Itua, the Governor stated this while receiving the leadership of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Benin Branch, and members of the Local Organising Committee (LOC) for the forthcoming NBA National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, Governor Okpebholo described the failure of the previous administration to swear in three judges duly cleared by the National Judicial Council (NJC) as “a slap on the face of the judiciary” and “a grave injustice.”
He said the decision to finally swear in the judges was taken after a personal review of the case, which revealed no reason for the delay. “We are in government to make a real difference that Edo people can feel,” the Governor said. “The refusal to swear in those judges, despite NJC clearance, was unjustifiable. Justice delayed is justice denied, and I could not allow such injustice to continue.”
Okpebholo reaffirmed his administration’s readiness to collaborate with the Bar in reforming the justice system and announced plans to provide operational vehicles for the NBA to enhance its outreach and engagements. “Our government will continue to support the NBA to perform its duties effectively. We are committed to building a justice system that works for every Edo citizen,” he added.
Chairman of the NBA, Benin Branch, Barr. Idemudia Iredia Osifo, commended the Governor for his bold reforms, particularly his prompt action in swearing in the sidelined judges and restoring the Customary Court of Appeal, which was scrapped by the former government. “Your Excellency, your decision to correct past injustices shows courage and respect for the rule of law,” Osifo said. “We also commend your focus on improving security and governance in Edo State.”
Osifo further announced that the NBA would hold a Land Administration Seminar on November 5, 2025, to review the Governor’s powers under the Land Use Act, examine community land practices, and make policy recommendations to the government.
Present at the meeting were the Deputy Governor, Rt. Hon. Dennis Idahosa, and other top government officials.
