The Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mr. Ola Olukoyede, has called for a comprehensive review of the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP) Act to enhance the fight against corruption. This appeal was made during a meeting with the BPP management team, led by Mamman Ahmadu, at the EFCC headquarters in Abuja.
Olukoyede emphasized the necessity of revising the BPP Act to better support anti-corruption measures, noting that the current legislation has not been fully operationalized and has not significantly aided in securing convictions. He stated, “The law as it stands has not facilitated prosecutions effectively. If we are serious about reforming our contract and procurement processes, we must address the shortcomings of the BPP Act.”
Highlighting concerns about the BPP’s issuance of Certificates of No Objection, Olukoyede urged for a review of the procedures to prevent misuse. He also stressed the importance of collaboration between the EFCC and BPP, particularly in preventive strategies, to ensure more effective governance and reduce corruption in public procurement.
Ahmadu, in his remarks, reiterated the importance of collaboration between the two agencies, underscoring the commitment of BPP officials to work with the EFCC in addressing procurement-related corruption.
The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to strengthen inter-agency cooperation and improve the effectiveness of Nigeria’s anti-corruption framework.
