In a recent operation under “Operation DELTA SANITY,” the Nigerian Navy Ship PATHFINDER successfully intercepted and apprehended both a Fibre Boat and a large Cotonou Boat carrying approximately 70,000 liters of illegally refined petroleum products. The interception took place near Idama Community in Rivers State on Sunday, February 18, 2024.

The operation marks a significant achievement in the ongoing efforts by Nigerian authorities to curb illegal activities in the region, particularly the illicit refining and transportation of petroleum products. Illegal refining has long been a major concern in Nigeria, leading to environmental degradation, loss of revenue for the government, and other associated criminal activities.
The interception demonstrates the commitment of the Nigerian Navy to enforcing maritime security and combating illegal activities in the Niger Delta region. Such operations not only aim to safeguard Nigeria’s territorial waters but also to protect the interests of lawful businesses and communities affected by these illegal practices.

Further investigations are expected to be conducted into the incident, with those responsible for the illegal activities likely to face legal consequences in accordance with Nigerian law. The successful interception serves as a deterrent to others engaged in similar unlawful practices, sending a clear message that such activities will not be tolerated.
Authorities continue to emphasize the importance of collaboration between law enforcement agencies, local communities, and stakeholders in addressing the root causes of illegal activities in the Niger Delta. By working together, they aim to foster sustainable development and security in the region, ensuring a brighter future for all Nigerians.
