Police alert medical personnel on potential gunshot victims after robbery in Lugbe

The FCT Police Command has issued an alert to all medical personnel in and around the Federal Capital Territory following a robbery incident in Lugbe. The incident occurred on Thursday, August 1, 2024, when hoodlums exploited ongoing protests to block the Lugbe end of the Shehu Musa Yaradua Expressway around 10 pm.

In a statement the Police Public Relations Officer for the FCT Police Command, Abuja SP Adeh Josephine said the assailants engaged in a spree of robberies and assaults on innocent citizens, leading to an exchange of gunfire with police operatives.

In light of the Compulsory Treatment and Care for Victims of Gunshot Act 2017, the FCT Command emphasized that medical personnel should treat gunshot wound victims as medical emergencies requiring immediate attention. Hospitals and healthcare facilities are instructed to provide necessary medical assistance to such patients while notifying the relevant Police Division or Formation for an interview to ascertain the individual’s identity and involvement in the incident.

The Commissioner of Police for the FCT, CP Benneth C. Igweh, issued a stern warning to those using the protests as cover for criminal activities, including armed robbery, shop breaking, rape, assault, and vandalization of public property. He assured the public that police officers and other security agents are on high alert to maintain law and order and prevent further criminal acts.
