The Nigeria Police Force on October 30, 2024 arraigned Hon. Alexander Mascot Ikwechegh at the Kuje Magistrate Court on multiple charges, including Abuse of Office, Criminal Intimidation, and Assault.

These allegations stem from an incident involving a bolt driver, Stephen Abuwatseya, who claimed he was assaulted by Ikwechegh on the evening of October 27.

According to a statement from the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Special Investigation Unit and Legal Section of the Nigeria Police conducted a comprehensive investigation into the allegations. The findings led to the formal charges being filed against Ikwechegh, underscoring the police’s commitment to addressing incidents of misconduct, especially involving public officials.

Adejobi noted that the incident has raised significant public concern, prompting the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun to demand a thorough and impartial investigation. “The IGP has reiterated the Force’s dedication to ensuring that justice is served and that human dignity is upheld,” Adejobi stated. He emphasized that the police are focused on promoting respect for the law and maintaining public trust.

In light of this case, the IGP reassured citizens that the Nigeria Police Force remains steadfast in its mission to uphold the rule of law, stating, “No one is above the law, and we will take all necessary steps to ensure that justice is delivered.” This commitment reflects a broader effort to enhance accountability within the police force and the justice system.

The arraignment of Hon. Ikwechegh marks a significant moment in the ongoing discourse around the conduct of public officials and their accountability to the law. As the case unfolds, it is likely to attract further attention from the media and the public, highlighting the crucial role of law enforcement in maintaining order and justice in society.
