In a major crackdown on cybercrime, the Ilorin Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) announced the arrest of 55 individuals suspected of internet fraud across Offa, a town in the Offa Local Government Area of Kwara State.
The arrests took place on Wednesday, October 30, 2024, as part of an intensified effort by the EFCC to tackle cyber-related offenses in the region.
According to a statement from the EFCC, the suspects were apprehended following a sting operation carried out at various identified hideouts. The operation was based on reliable intelligence that linked the individuals to internet fraud and other related crimes. The EFCC disclosed that officers strategically coordinated the raid to ensure the swift capture of all suspects.
Items recovered during the operation include nine luxury cars, two motorbikes, laptops, smartphones, and several charms, which are suspected to be used by some of the suspects for ritualistic purposes, often believed to enhance illicit operations. The confiscated items have been taken into EFCC custody as evidence to aid in prosecuting the suspects.
This operation aligns with the EFCC’s mission to curb the rising trend of cybercrime, particularly among young people, as part of its broader mandate to uphold financial integrity in Nigeria. The EFCC has assured the public that thorough investigations are currently underway and that the suspects will face prosecution once the investigations are completed.
The arrests underscore the EFCC’s commitment to combatting internet fraud and its ongoing efforts to dismantle networks of individuals allegedly exploiting digital platforms for financial gain at the expense of victims globally.
