Police arrest 50 suspects, seize anti-aircraft launcher in nationwide crackdown

The Nigeria Police Force has recorded a major operational breakthrough, arresting 50 suspects and recovering a cache of high-grade weapons in a series of coordinated operations targeting terrorism, kidnapping, and armed robbery.

At a press briefing on April 13, 2026, at the Force Intelligence Department–Intelligence Response Team (FID-IRT) headquarters in Abuja, police authorities said the arrests followed sustained intelligence-led operations conducted across multiple states.

According to the Force, the crackdown forms part of a broader strategy to dismantle criminal syndicates undermining national security. Between January and April 2026, operatives reportedly neutralised several clandestine cells and recovered significant weaponry and logistics, including 17 rifles, one anti-aircraft launcher, 111 rounds of live ammunition, 17 cartridges, nine magazines, five walkie-talkie communication devices, three mobile phones, and a vehicle.

Among the key successes highlighted was the takedown of a 33-member gang linked to terrorism, cattle rustling, and a violent attack on a Christ Apostolic Church in Kwara State. Police also confirmed the arrest of suspects allegedly responsible for the killing of three officers attached to the Donga Divisional Headquarters in Taraba State.

The operations further extended to the Federal Capital Territory and neighbouring states, where specialised criminal networks involved in “one-chance” abductions, car burglaries, and fake police checkpoints were disrupted. Authorities said these arrests led to the recovery of stolen items and tools used in perpetrating the crimes.

In a separate operation, FID-IRT operatives, acting on intelligence, arrested a 25-year-old suspect, Nasiru Ibrahim, in the Igumale area of Benue State. He was found in possession of an AK-47 rifle, a magazine, and eight rounds of live ammunition. Preliminary investigations indicate links to a suspected bandit identified as Janari, who allegedly supplied the weapon. Police said efforts are ongoing to apprehend the fugitive and dismantle the wider network.

The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, reaffirmed the Force’s commitment to national security, stating that the latest achievements underscore ongoing efforts to curb violent crime and bring perpetrators to justice.

Police authorities added that several suspects are already facing prosecution, while investigations continue to track down additional accomplices and recover more illegal arms.
