The Ondo State Police Command has arrested four police officers captured in a viral social media video allegedly making unprofessional and ethnically insensitive remarks to a motorist during a stop-and-search operation along the Lagos–Benin Expressway.
Addressing journalists on Friday, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, said the officers had been identified and taken into custody following the circulation of the video, which sparked widespread public outrage.
The officers were identified as Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Elomore Sodayo, Inspector Adefila Adewale, Inspector Olorunfemi Opeyemi and Inspector Odusola Peter.
Jimoh disclosed that the Commissioner of Police in Ondo State, Felix Ohagwu, had ordered a comprehensive investigation into the incident to establish the circumstances surrounding the officers’ conduct and determine their individual levels of culpability.
He stressed that the Nigeria Police Force remains a disciplined and professional institution that does not tolerate misconduct, incivility or actions capable of undermining public confidence, promoting ethnic division or bringing the Force into disrepute.
“The officers captured in the video have been arrested, and the Commissioner of Police has directed a thorough investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident and the level of culpability of each officer involved,” he said.
According to the command, police personnel are expected to conduct themselves professionally at all times, uphold human dignity and strictly comply with the Force’s Code of Conduct and Standard Operating Procedures.
Jimoh assured the public that the investigation would be conducted with fairness, transparency and accountability, adding that any officer found to have violated the ethics and professional standards of the Nigeria Police Force would face appropriate disciplinary action in accordance with the law and established procedures.
The command reiterated its commitment to professional, intelligence-led and community-oriented policing, while urging members of the public to continue supporting law enforcement by reporting cases of police misconduct through the appropriate complaint channels.
The viral video, which circulated widely on social media, has renewed public concern over police conduct during stop-and-search operations and prompted calls for greater accountability within the Force.
