- IGP orders intensified crackdown on illegal arms
In a major breakthrough against arms trafficking, operatives of the Nigeria Police Force Intelligence Response Team (IRT) have arrested five suspects involved in trans-border gunrunning. The suspects, identified as Adamu Noma, Matthew Audu, Andrew Poyi, Aminu Sani, and Aminu Talha, were apprehended on November 18, 2024, in Zamfara State.
A search of the suspects led to the recovery of a cache of weapons, including:
- 10 locally fabricated AK-47 rifles
- 5 Israeli-made AK-47 rifles
- 1 revolver pistol
- 1 pump-action rifle
- 20 rounds of AK-47 ammunition
- A welding machine used for fabricating firearms
The arrests underscore the Nigeria Police Force’s ongoing commitment to dismantling criminal networks and enhancing national security.
Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun has reiterated his directive to all tactical units to intensify efforts to mop up illegal arms and dismantle local arms manufacturing operations. He emphasized that no effort will be spared in curbing the proliferation of illicit firearms across the country.
The Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, assured Nigerians that the police remain resolute in their mission to combat crime and ensure public safety.
