Police crack down on one-way driving in FCT

The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has warned motorists against driving against traffic, popularly known as “one-way,” and other dangerous traffic violations, as it ordered intensified enforcement across Abuja.

The Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, CP Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi, PhD, FCAI, gave the directive on Sunday, August 16, 2026, charging all Divisional Police Officers and Motor Traffic (MOTOPOL) personnel to strictly enforce traffic laws and arrest and prosecute offenders.

The directive, according to the Command, is aimed at promoting road safety, ensuring smooth traffic flow and preventing avoidable loss of lives and property arising from reckless driving and other traffic violations.

Sanusi specifically ordered officers to clamp down on motorists who drive against traffic, while directing intensified patrols and surveillance around major roads, traffic-congested areas, junctions and stop signs.

The Commissioner said the increased police presence was also necessary to tackle traffic robbery, with officers directed to identify and arrest criminals who exploit traffic congestion and stationary vehicles to dispossess unsuspecting motorists and other road users of their valuables.

He, however, charged personnel to conduct the enforcement exercise with professionalism, civility and strict adherence to the rule of law.

Sanusi warned police officers against turning the operation into an avenue for extortion, harassment, intimidation or unlawful use of force, stressing that any personnel found abusing members of the public or violating the directive would face disciplinary action.

The Command urged motorists and other road users to obey traffic signs and regulations, avoid reckless driving and cooperate with security personnel during enforcement operations.

It also called on residents to promptly report suspicious persons and activities to the nearest police station or through its emergency lines: 08032003913 and 08028940883.

The statement was signed by the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, ANIPR, MIPRA.
