The Delta State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a police officer captured in a viral video shooting at the vehicle of an unarmed citizen in Asaba, the state capital.
According to a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Edafe Bright, the Command, after reviewing the footage, found that the officer’s conduct was “unprofessional and unbecoming of a law enforcement officer.”
The Command strongly condemned the incident, stressing that no officer is permitted to discharge a firearm without adherence to Force Order 237, which outlines strict conditions for the use of firearms by police personnel.
The statement revealed that the erring officer has been identified, summoned, and detained at the Command Headquarters, following directives from the Commissioner of Police, CP Olufemi Abaniwonda. Internal disciplinary procedures have already been initiated.
While clarifying that the officer had been responding to a reported hit-and-run case, the Command emphasized that such actions remain unjustified.
CP Abaniwonda assured the public that the officer will face appropriate disciplinary measures in accordance with the Police Act and regulations, to serve as a deterrent to others.
He reaffirmed that the protection of lives and property remains the foremost priority of the Delta State Police Command.
