Police bust rail vandalism ring, recover ₦400m assets

The Nigeria Police Force has foiled a railway vandalism syndicate, recovering infrastructure materials valued at over ₦400 million and arresting two suspects, in a major intelligence-led operation.

The breakthrough was achieved by operatives of the Force Intelligence Department Special Tactical Squad (FID-STS), who apprehended the suspects—Chisom Goodnews (32) and Ahmed Adamu (22)—on April 9, 2026, at about 6:00 p.m. in Akwanga.

According to police authorities, the arrest followed credible intelligence which led to the interception of a trailer truck transporting approximately 60 tonnes of vandalised railway tracks and sleepers.

The materials, concealed beneath sacks of groundnut shells to evade detection, were being moved from Bauchi State to Ilorin, suggesting a coordinated supply chain involving multiple actors.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the truck driver had been contracted for ₦2.5 million to convey the illicit cargo, while further inquiries point to an organised network linked to receivers of stolen railway infrastructure.

In a notable development, police operatives involved in the operation reportedly rejected a ₦100 million bribe allegedly offered in an attempt to compromise the investigation and secure the release of both the suspects and the recovered exhibits.

The trailer used in transporting the materials has been seized, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend other members of the syndicate, including the intended buyers, and to recover additional stolen assets.

Reacting to the development, the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, commended the operatives for their professionalism, discipline, and integrity, describing their actions as a reflection of the core values of the Force.

The Force Public Relations Officer, Anthony Okon Placid, reaffirmed the commitment of the police to protecting critical national infrastructure and tackling vandalism across the country.

The Nigeria Police Force reiterated its resolve to dismantle criminal networks targeting public assets and ensure those involved are brought to justice.
