Police clarify Sowore arrest, deny torture allegations

The Nigeria Police Force has refuted claims of torture in the recent arrest and detention of activist Omoyele Sowore, stating that his apprehension was based on “credible and corroborated” allegations of forgery, cyberstalking, and other criminal offences under investigation.

Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, said the arrest complied fully with constitutional safeguards and due process, with Sowore released on bail within the constitutionally stipulated 48-hour period, as provided under Section 35(4) of the 1999 Constitution.

Adejobi dismissed as false the circulation of images suggesting that Sowore sustained injuries in custody, noting that the bandage seen on his arm was part of his personal belongings before arrest. He added that the Inspector-General of Police had ordered an internal inquiry into how the bandage was used in detention, given Sowore’s refusal to undergo medical examinations offered twice by independent police medical teams on 7 and 8 August 2025.

The Police also stressed that Sowore’s continued detention at certain points was backed by a valid court-issued remand order, and reiterated that no one is above the law. The statement urged the media and public to avoid sensationalism and to report with accuracy and responsibility, while reaffirming the Force’s commitment to human rights, the rule of law, and transparent judicial processes.
