The Delta State Police Command has recorded a major breakthrough in its fight against kidnapping and violent crime with the arrest of a notorious suspected kidnapper and members of his gang, alongside the recovery of several firearms, including an AK-47 rifle.
The operation followed a series of complaints linking one Liberty Kunu, popularly known as “Commander Liberty” or “Double Agent,” and his gang to kidnapping, abduction and other criminal activities in Sapele and its environs. Acting on the reports, the Commissioner of Police directed the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Sapele, to deploy operatives to verify the allegations and dismantle the syndicate.
On January 17, 2026, at about 6:00 p.m., the command received a distress report on the abduction of three persons at Boyo Road Junction, Sapele. While being taken to the bush, one of the victims escaped and promptly reported the incident at a police station. The remaining two victims were allegedly robbed of valuables estimated at ₦9 million.
Preliminary investigations identified the gang, led by Liberty Kunu—who allegedly operated under the guise of a security volunteer group—as responsible for the abduction and armed robbery. Based on actionable intelligence, operatives of the Commissioner of Police Special Assignment Team (CP-SAT), in collaboration with personnel from the Sapele Division, launched a coordinated operation that led to the arrest of Kunu and five other suspects.
Those arrested include Twale Golly (33), Michael Kunu (25), Israel Ugwu (30), Ogaga Power (43), and Mercy Kunu (28). Recovered during the arrests were five pump-action guns, one Beretta pistol, and other incriminating items.
Further investigations revealed that Liberty Kunu is a suspected member of the Aye confraternity and was believed to be in possession of an AK-47 rifle. When confronted, he reportedly admitted the claim and, at about 11:35 p.m. on January 28, 2026, led operatives to a hideout in the Ibada-Elume community. A search of the forested area resulted in the recovery of one AK-47 rifle and a locally fabricated revolver concealed in the bush.
The police said investigations are ongoing, while efforts are being intensified to apprehend other members of the gang and bring all suspects to justice.
