Police repatriate $23,000 to romance scam victim in Cayman Islands

The Nigeria Police Force, through its INTERPOL National Central Bureau (NCB) in Abuja, has successfully repatriated $23,000 recovered from an international romance scammer to the victim in the Cayman Islands.

Confirming the report, Force Public Relations Officer, confirmed the development from the Force Headquarters in Abuja Ag. ACP Benjamin Hundeyin said the repatriation followed a formal request from the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service for assistance in investigating a Nigerian national, Achufusi Obioma Ikenna, who defrauded a resident of the Cayman Islands via an online romance scam.

Acting on the request, INTERPOL NCB Abuja conducted discreet, intelligence-led investigations, resulting in the arrest of the suspect and the recovery of the $23,000.

Upon completion of all necessary documentation, and in collaboration with international partners, the recovered funds were formally handed over to the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service through the British High Commission in Abuja, represented by Mr. Shaun McLeary, for secure delivery to the victim. The suspect will be arraigned following the conclusion of investigations.

The Nigeria Police Force said the successful repatriation underscores its commitment to intelligence-driven policing, international collaboration, and the disruption of transnational cybercrime networks. The Force reaffirmed its resolve to trace and recover proceeds of crime, return them to victims, and ensure offenders are brought to justice in accordance with national and international laws.
