The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has rescued two abandoned babies in separate incidents in Kurudu and Gwagwalada, Abuja, and appealed to members of the public to help identify their mothers and other family members.
In a statement Police Public Relations Officer, FCT Police Command, SP Josephine Adeh said the first incident occurred on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, at about 5:30 p.m. along Obodo Street, Kurudu, after a resident, Mr. Innocent, heard the cry of a baby and discovered a child carefully wrapped in cloth and abandoned inside a carton.
Following the report at Kurudu Police Station, officers from the division, alongside personnel of the Juveniles and Women Care (JWC) Department, immediately responded to the scene and rescued the baby boy.
The child was taken to a nearby hospital for medical assessment and was confirmed to be in stable condition. After the necessary documentation, the baby was handed over to the Social Welfare Department for further care, while police investigators continue efforts to determine the circumstances surrounding his abandonment.
In a similar incident later that day, at about 9:40 p.m., a Gwagwalada resident, Mr. Ibrahim, heard the cry of a baby outside his gate. He subsequently discovered a baby girl apparently abandoned at the premises.
Ibrahim, assisted by other concerned community members, rescued the child and reported the incident at Gwagwalada Police Station at about 10:15 p.m.
Police personnel from the JWC Department subsequently took the baby girl to the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital for medical examination and care. She remains under medical attention pending her eventual handover to the Social Welfare Department.
The FCT Police Command commended Mr. Innocent, Mr. Ibrahim and other members of the community for their prompt intervention, describing their actions as crucial to ensuring the safety and wellbeing of the abandoned children.
The Command appealed to anyone with information that could help identify the mothers or relatives of either baby to come forward and provide such information to the nearest police station.
