President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of His Royal Majesty, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, the Awujale of Ijebuland, describing him as one of Nigeria’s most revered and accomplished traditional rulers.
The Awujale passed on after an extraordinary reign of over 65 years, having ascended the throne at the age of 26. His death was announced on Saturday, July 13, 2025—the same day former President Muhammadu Buhari also passed away.
In his statement, President Tinubu said the news brought “double pain” to his heart, noting that Oba Adetona’s death leaves a profound void in the traditional institution of Yorubaland and Nigeria at large.
“Oba Adetona was a towering monarch who served his people with grace, honour, and unwavering commitment. His reign brought remarkable progress to Ijebu-Ode and Ijebuland, and he stood as a voice of reason during national trials,” Tinubu said.
The President also highlighted the monarch’s contributions to education and governance through the establishment of the School of Postgraduate and Research Studies in Governance at Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye.
Describing the late monarch as a confidante, honest arbiter, and dependable leader, Tinubu reflected on their personal relationship and the wisdom he drew from their interactions.
He extended heartfelt condolences to the royal family, Governor Dapo Abiodun, the Ogun State Government, and the people of Ijebuland.
“May our departed Kabiyesi find eternal rest, and may his legacy continue to guide and inspire us,” the President concluded.
