The Chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC), DIG Hashimu Argungu (rtd), has sought the collaboration of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in conducting drug integrity tests for police recruits across the country.
Argungu made the request on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, during a courtesy visit to the NDLEA headquarters in Abuja, where he led a delegation of PSC management to meet with NDLEA Chairman/Chief Executive Officer, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (rtd).
The PSC Chairman emphasized the importance of ensuring only individuals with sound mental and physical integrity are admitted into the police force. “We want to decentralize the screening to all states and, because the NDLEA has a presence nationwide, we are seeking your support to help identify recruits already using drugs. We cannot arm individuals who are drug-dependent—it’s dangerous,” he said.
Argungu stressed the need for strict adherence to processes and procedures during recruitment, warning that any compromise could result in negative outcomes for national security.
In response, Gen. Marwa assured the PSC of NDLEA’s full support, noting that drug abuse remains a significant national challenge with implications for public safety and security. He reiterated the importance of a whole-of-government and whole-of-society approach in combating drug-related issues.
