In a bid to foster national unity and development, Senator Barau I. Jibrin, Deputy President of the Senate, has called upon Northerners residing in the southern part of Nigeria to prioritize unity and support the communities they inhabit.
In an official statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity Ismail Mudashir said Senator Barau made this plea during a meeting with leaders of the Hausa communities from the six states of the South-West, who visited him at his office in the National Assembly Complex, Abuja.
Highlighting the importance of unity in a country as ethnically diverse as Nigeria, Senator Barau emphasized the need for brotherhood among all ethnic groups. He underscored that the constitution of the nation guarantees citizens the right to reside wherever they choose, provided they adhere to the law.
Addressing the visiting leaders, Senator Barau urged them to continue fostering peaceful coexistence with their neighbors in the South. He assured them of his commitment to addressing their concerns and challenges, emphasizing the importance of considering their current places of residence as their homes.
Commending President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his efforts in alleviating the burden of rising food prices by releasing grains, Senator Barau encouraged other leaders, including governors and local government chairmen, to emulate such initiatives.
He stressed the necessity for collective action at all levels of government to tackle the nation’s challenges effectively. Senator Barau announced his plans to distribute rice to 200,000 households as part of his contribution to mitigating the impact of food inflation.
Earlier in the meeting, Alhaji Inuwa Garba, the leader of the delegation representing Hausa communities in Ogun State, expressed concerns over the marginalization of Northerners in education and employment opportunities in the South-West. He appealed to Senator Barau for assistance in addressing these issues.
In response, Senator Barau reassured the delegation of his commitment to empowering communities, citing his initiatives in various senatorial districts of Kano State as examples.
