Senator Barau’s Foundation opens applications for postgraduate scholarships in AI, forensics, and robotics

The Barau I Jibrin Foundation (BIJF), established by Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau I. Jibrin, has announced the opening of applications for postgraduate scholarships in Artificial Intelligence, Forensic Science, and Robotics.

According to a statement by Ismail Mudashir, Special Adviser to the Deputy President of the Senate on Media and Publicity, the scholarship committee’s secretary, Dr. Maikudi Lawan, explained that these foreign scholarships aim to provide humanitarian, educational, and empowerment opportunities across Nigeria. The fields of AI, Forensics, and Robotics were chosen to equip citizens with specialized skills essential for the country’s technological advancement.

“The scholarship program was designed to promote academic excellence and support deserving individuals from the Kano North Senatorial District,” Dr. Lawan said. Applicants can choose from three specific programs: M.Tech. in Information Security & Cyber Forensics, M.Tech. in Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning, and M.Tech. in Robotics Sciences. The scholarships are part of the foundation’s broader effort to contribute to Nigeria’s technological progress.

“We are offering postgraduate scholarships in these specialized fields to equip our youths with the skills needed for the future. Graduates will become experts, thus contributing significantly to the technological advancement of our country,” Dr. Lawan stated. The scholarship program, which lasts approximately 18 months, is expected to see its first graduates by 2026. The application deadline is July 30, 2024.

Senator Barau had previously pledged, on December 1 of last year, to offer postgraduate scholarships to indigent students from the Kano North Senatorial District who graduate with First Class honors. This announcement was made when he hosted the leadership of the Students Union Government (SUG) of Bayero University Kano (BUK) at the National Assembly. He committed to sponsoring students in fields such as Artificial Intelligence, Forensics, and Robotics at the postgraduate level.
