  • Spanish Ambassador meets with Nigerian Naval Command to boost maritime security cooperation

The Spanish Navy Ship (SNS) BAM Meteoro docked at the GDNL Terminal 12, Apapa, Lagos, in a strategic visit aimed at strengthening maritime ties between Spain and Nigeria. This visit underscores Spain’s commitment to fostering deeper cooperation with the Nigerian Navy, particularly in areas of maritime security and regional stability in the Gulf of Guinea.

The SNS BAM Meteoro, an offshore patrol vessel, was warmly received by senior officers from the Headquarters of the Western Naval Command and Western Fleet. The arrival ceremony highlighted the importance of the bilateral partnership between Spain and Nigeria, with both nations reaffirming their dedication to tackling maritime challenges such as piracy, illegal fishing, and smuggling, which have affected the security of West Africa’s coastal waters.

The visit is scheduled to run from September 24 to 27, during which several key engagements will take place. These include joint maritime exercises, collaborative discussions on security initiatives, and knowledge exchange sessions aimed at bolstering the capabilities of both navies in ensuring the safety of shipping lanes and the prevention of maritime crime.

As part of the official program, on Wednesday, September 25, 2024, the Spanish Ambassador to Nigeria, Juan Ignacio Sell, accompanied by the Commanding Officer of SNS BAM Meteoro, paid a courtesy visit to the Flag Officer Commanding (FOC) of the Western Naval Command, Rear Admiral MB Hassan. During the visit, both parties discussed areas of mutual interest, including further opportunities for cooperation in enhancing maritime security within the Gulf of Guinea.

Ambassador Sell commended the Nigerian Navy for its efforts in promoting peace and security in the region and emphasized Spain’s commitment to supporting these initiatives. Rear Admiral Hassan also acknowledged the importance of Spain’s partnership, stating that the collaboration would further strengthen regional security efforts.

The visit of SNS BAM Meteoro comes at a critical time as the Gulf of Guinea continues to face persistent maritime challenges, including piracy, illegal bunkering, and drug trafficking. The presence of the Spanish Navy in Nigerian waters signals a growing international focus on the region’s security, with Spain positioning itself as a key ally in addressing these challenges.

In addition to military engagements, the visit will feature diplomatic interactions and cultural exchanges between the two nations. It is expected that the visit will further solidify the already strong relationship between Spain and Nigeria, providing a platform for enhanced maritime cooperation in the future.

The SNS BAM Meteoro’s visit highlights Spain’s broader strategic interest in West Africa, particularly in ensuring the safe and secure movement of goods and resources through one of the world’s most important maritime corridors. It also reflects Nigeria’s role as a key player in regional maritime security, with the Nigerian Navy playing a pivotal role in multinational efforts to safeguard the Gulf of Guinea from threats.
