- Calls for concerted efforts towards attainment of constitutional autonomy
The Speaker of the House of Representatives Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, has congratulated the newly elected leaders of the Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures in Nigeria.
In a recent announcement conveyed by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Musa Abdullahi Krishi, the Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, Speaker of the House of Representatives, extended his warm congratulations to the newly elected leaders of the Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures in Nigeria.
The Speaker also took the opportunity to extend his felicitations to the All-Progressives Congress (APC) Conference of Speakers and the Northern Speakers Forum for the successful conclusion of their elections during the annual general meeting (AGM).
At the national body’s recent congress, Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin, Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, emerged as the newly elected Chairman of the Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures of Nigeria, while Alhaji Nasir Yahaya-Daura, Speaker of the Katsina State House of Assembly, assumed the role of Deputy Chairman.
In a related development, Hon. Yakubu Danladi-Salihu from the Kwara State House of Assembly was elected as the Chairman of the APC Conference of Speakers, and Hon. Yusuf Liman Dahiru, Speaker of the Kaduna State House of Assembly, was appointed as the chairman of the Northern Speakers’ Forum.
Speaker Abbas commended the state assemblies’ presiding officers for their exemplary conduct throughout the election process. He also urged members of the conference, both individually and collectively, to uphold the independence of the legislature, which represents the cornerstone of democracy in their respective states.
Emphasizing the significance of legislative independence, Speaker Abbas highlighted the indispensable role played by legislative bodies at all levels of government. He stressed the importance of maintaining checks and balances to uphold democratic principles and ensure effective governance.
Speaker Abbas further reminded the newly elected leaders of their responsibility to hold their respective executive arms accountable to the people through effective oversight, emphasizing that this can only be achieved with complete constitutional autonomy.
Expressing confidence in the collective experiences of the new chairpersons of the national, regional, and party-affiliated Speakers’ forums, Speaker Abbas anticipates their collaboration will elevate the status and democratic standing of state legislatures to new and admirable heights. He extended his best wishes to the new leadership of the three state assembly Speakers’ bodies and called upon them to exhibit unwavering integrity in their leadership roles.
