Tinubu charges acting IGP to restore security

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Wednesday directed Acting Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Ridwan Disu to restore peace and strengthen security across the country.

The President gave the charge during the decoration of Disu as Acting IGP at the State House, Abuja, following the retirement of former Inspector-General of Police Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun. The appointment is subject to ratification by the Nigeria Police Council and confirmation by the Senate. The council is expected to meet next week.

“I made this decision for you to assume this responsibility. I know your record. I saw the dedication you exhibited while you were in Lagos when I was governor,” the President said.

Describing the appointment as coming at a critical time, Tinubu urged the new police chief to rebuild public confidence in the Force and deepen collaboration with other security agencies.

“Lead firmly but fairly, demand professionalism at every level and ensure that the safety of lives and property remains our highest priority. It is a daunting challenge. I know you can do it. You have my word, you have my full support,” he stated.

The President tasked Disu with advancing the security components of his administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, expressing confidence in his discipline, operational experience and leadership capacity.

“Nigeria is challenged with banditry, terrorism and other criminal activities. You will be part of the thinking and innovation to overcome them,” Tinubu added, reaffirming his belief that the country would prevail under committed leadership.

He also paid tribute to the outgoing IGP, Egbetokun, who attended the ceremony with his spouse, commending his service in maintaining law and order.

“To the outgoing Inspector-General, we are a grateful nation. Nigeria appreciates your contribution,” the President said, urging him to remain available to offer guidance to his successor.

“You have not succeeded without a good successor. His success will also be part of your legacy,” he added.

Dignitaries at the ceremony included the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu; the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila; Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori; and retired Assistant Inspector-General of Police Hakeem Odumosu, alongside senior government officials and members of the Acting IGP’s family.

The President called on all security stakeholders to work collectively to safeguard lives and property during what he described as a critical period for the nation.
