Traditional rulers urged to mediate in herders-farmers conflicts

The Kulen Allah Cattle Rearers Association of Nigeria (KACRAN) has called on Traditional Rulers across the country to take proactive steps in resolving the ongoing conflicts between herders and farmers.

In a statement on Thursday, KACRAN’s National President, Hon. Khalil Bello, emphasized the critical role of Emirs and Chiefs in fostering peace and dialogue.

“Historically, before European colonization, Traditional Rulers had full authority over land management, ensuring mutual respect between herders and farmers. Though modern laws place land ownership under state governments, Traditional Rulers remain respected custodians of land within their domains,” the statement read.

KACRAN acknowledged the continued influence of Emirs and Chiefs in conflict mediation, citing the Emir of Fika, Alhaji Muhammad Ibn Abali Ibn Idrisa, who collaborates with KACRAN to maintain peace during farming seasons. His interventions, such as monitoring grazing reserves and enforcing compliance, have been instrumental in preventing conflicts.

The association also commended the Emir of Bade, Alhaji Abubakar Umar Suleiman, for assisting the Yobe State Government in reclaiming the Jakusko Nasari grazing reserve from encroachment.

Given their effectiveness in resolving disputes, KACRAN urged all Emirs and Chiefs to actively engage in peace efforts and called on state governments to empower Traditional Rulers with administrative authority, financial resources, and logistical support to mediate conflicts effectively.

KACRAN concluded by highlighting the essential role of Traditional Leaders in national peace and stability, stressing the need for their full engagement and necessary support to ensure lasting resolutions to herders-farmers conflicts.
