Troops foil kidnap attempt on Enugu–Otukpo road, rescue three victims

Troops of Sector 1 under Operation WHIRL STROKE have foiled a kidnapping attempt along the Enugu–Otukpo Road, rescuing three victims without casualties.

The incident occurred on February 25, 2026, when troops stationed at the Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Otukpo received credible intelligence during a routine night patrol that an 18-seater Benue Links bus, registration number TYK 221 YK, had been hijacked by suspected kidnappers. The vehicle was reportedly conveying four passengers and a minor at the time of the attack.

According to military sources, the troops immediately mobilised to the scene and pursued the assailants along their escape route. The swift response compelled the kidnappers to abandon three of the victims. No direct engagement was recorded during the pursuit, but a mobile phone believed to belong to one of the suspects was recovered at the scene.

The Force Commander of Operation WHIRL STROKE commended the troops for their vigilance and operational effectiveness, noting that their timely intervention averted what could have escalated into a major security incident.

He also urged motorists to remain alert while travelling, particularly along vulnerable corridors. Road users were advised to be cautious of unusual gaps in vehicular movement within a two-kilometre radius and to pause to assess the situation where necessary. Drivers were further encouraged to report suspicious activities promptly to the nearest security outpost to facilitate rapid response.
