Troops foil terrorist attack, rescue two in Sokoto

Troops of the Joint Task Force North West, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, have arrested a suspected illicit drug peddler in Kaduna State, foiled a terrorist attack and rescued two kidnapped victims in Sokoto State.

The military disclosed that the operations were conducted separately on September 12 and 13, 2026, as troops intensified efforts to deny terrorists and other criminal elements freedom of action across the North-West.

In Kaduna State, troops of Sector 1, while conducting a stop-and-search operation along the Kaduna–Birnin Gwari road on September 12, intercepted a suspect identified as Yohana Musa.

According to the military, Musa was found in possession of a large quantity of illicit drugs and other substances while travelling towards Birnin Gwari.

The suspect and the recovered items have been taken into military custody for further investigation.

In Sokoto State, troops of Sector 2 responded to a distress call on September 13 following a terrorist attack on Unguwan Lalle in Sabon Birni Local Government Area.

The troops engaged the attackers with sustained firepower, forcing them to retreat in disarray. The operation also resulted in the rescue of two kidnapped victims.

The military said troops subsequently received intelligence indicating that the terrorists were attempting to regroup. They immediately mobilised to the area and re-established contact with the criminals, engaging them in a fierce gun battle.

The terrorists were again forced to withdraw, while troops conducted an exploitation of the area.

During the operation, the troops recovered 157 rounds of PKT ammunition, phone batteries and other items believed to be associated with the terrorists.

The Theatre Commander commended the troops for their gallantry, professionalism and continued operational successes, assuring that the military remained committed to denying terrorists and criminal elements freedom of action across the Joint Operations Area.

The military also appealed to members of the public to continue providing timely and credible information to security forces to support ongoing counter-terrorism and security operations.
