The United States Diplomatic Mission in Nigeria has bestowed upon Ms. Priscilla Ikos Usiobaifo, the Executive Director of Braveheart Initiative for Youth and Women (BHI), the prestigious 2024 Woman of Courage award. This recognition underscores Ms. Usiobaifo’s remarkable two-decade commitment to catalyzing legislative reforms and dismantling entrenched socio-cultural norms perpetuating gender-based violence in Nigeria.
In a statement issued by the embassy on Wednesday, the award ceremony held on March 27 in Abuja celebrated Ms. Usiobaifo’s outstanding contributions to advancing gender equality and justice. Art Brown, Acting Deputy Chief of Mission, emphasized the United States government’s steadfast dedication to combating gender-based violence as a fundamental element of its democracy promotion and human rights agenda.
Speaking at the ceremony, Brown articulated the theme of this year’s International Women’s Day, “Invest in women: accelerate progress,” underscoring the enduring investment by the United States government in empowering women and girls. He highlighted the collaborative efforts between the United States and Nigeria, along with local partners, in uplifting the lives of Nigerian women through various initiatives, including healthcare, entrepreneurship, and the eradication of gender-based violence.
The U.S. Embassy’s decision to confer the award aligns with its commitment to honoring individuals who exemplify dedication to advancing gender equality and equity. The statement emphasized the imperative of a comprehensive societal approach to address the root causes of gender-based violence, applauding Ms. Usiobaifo as a formidable advocate for women’s rights.

In her acceptance speech, Awardee Priscilla Ikos Usiobaifo expressed gratitude to the U.S. Mission for shining a spotlight on her work and pledged to redouble her efforts in advocating for the rights of women and girls. She underscored the importance of recognition for grassroots activists, particularly those working in marginalized communities, urging greater governmental accountability and justice for survivors of gender-based violence in Nigeria.
Senator Ireti Kingibe, Chairperson of the Senate Committee on Women Affairs, commended the U.S. Embassy for acknowledging Ms. Usiobaifo’s exemplary leadership, highlighting its potential to inspire other young women to continue their dedicated service. Similarly, Mrs. Dayo Benjamin-Laniyi, the FCT Mandate Secretary for Women Affairs, extended congratulations to Ms. Usiobaifo, affirming the Federal Capital Territory’s commitment to ending gender-based violence.
