UK reaffirms commitment to restoring peace and stability in Northeast Nigeria

The United Kingdom has reiterated its commitment to supporting peace, stability, and sustainable solutions in Nigeria’s troubled Northeast region, which has been severely impacted by insurgency.

The British Deputy High Commissioner, Gill Atkinson, made this pledge on Monday during a courtesy visit to Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum in Maiduguri.

Atkinson commended Governor Zulum for his unwavering commitment to combating insurgency and supporting displaced communities. She stated, “On behalf of the British Government, I recognise the Governor’s efforts in addressing insurgency and securing a prosperous future for the people of Borno State. I want to reaffirm the UK’s commitment to supporting peace, stability, and sustainable solutions, particularly through the ongoing regional stabilisation facility.”

Responding on behalf of the Governor, the Secretary to the Borno State Government expressed gratitude for the UK’s continued partnership and support. He noted, “We have established strong partnerships with the UK Government. His Excellency appreciates this support and has specifically instructed me to convey his heartfelt gratitude.”

The meeting was attended by senior government officials, including the Commissioner for Environment, Engr Emet Kois; Commissioner for Education, Engr Lawan Abba Wakilbe; Commissioner for Works and Housing, Engr Mustapha Gubio; Commissioner for Transport and Energy, Aliyu Mohammed Bamanga; and Commissioner for Inter-Governmental and Special Duties, Tukur Shani.

Also present were the Special Adviser on Security to the Governor, Abdullahi Ishaq; the Senior Technical Assistant on Political Affairs, Alhaji Tahiru Shettima; the Permanent Secretary for Political and Cabinet Affairs, Danjuma Ali; and the Executive Secretary of the Borno State Agency for Coordination of Sustainable Development and Humanitarian Response (BOACSDHR), Babakura Mamman Gadai.
