In a significant step toward addressing the challenges of internally displaced persons (IDPs) and fostering sustainable development, the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Nigeria, Mohamed Malick Fall, and the Minister of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, launched the Benue State Action Plan on Durable Solutions. The event, held in Makurdi, was hosted by the Executive Governor of Benue State, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia.
The launch of the State Action Plan on Durable Solutions represents a coordinated effort to tackle the long-standing issues of displacement in Benue, a state that has faced repeated humanitarian crises due to conflict, climate change, and communal clashes. The initiative aims to promote sustainable solutions for displaced persons while fostering long-term development and resilience among the local population.
In his remarks at the event, Mohamed Malick Fall emphasized the importance of collective action and the broader implications of the plan for the future of Benue and Nigeria. He stated: “This is not just about the launch of a plan; it is about a long-term vision for the future of Benue and Nigeria. It is about building a future where everyone, displaced or not, can thrive. Let us reaffirm the importance of working together to ensure no one is left behind.”
The action plan prioritizes the reintegration and resettlement of IDPs, support for livelihoods, the reconstruction of basic infrastructure, and the promotion of peace and security across affected communities. It is also aligned with global best practices for addressing displacement and sustainable development.
Governor Hyacinth Alia, in his address, expressed gratitude to the United Nations and other stakeholders for their commitment to Benue’s development. He reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to creating a safer, more prosperous state for all residents. “This action plan is a testament to our shared determination to rebuild our communities, restore hope, and provide a dignified future for every displaced person,” the governor said.
Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda also highlighted the federal government’s commitment to ensuring the success of the plan, urging all stakeholders, including local and international partners, to collaborate actively in its implementation.
This launch underscores the UN’s ongoing support for the Benue State Government and its people, focusing on durable solutions for displacement and sustainable development across the region. As Benue continues to navigate its challenges, the Action Plan is seen as a roadmap toward a future of resilience, stability, and inclusive growth.
