The Governing Council of the University of Abuja, recently renamed Yakubu Gowon University, has approved the promotion of 104 academic staff to professorial rank.

The decision was reached at the Council’s 78th Extraordinary Meeting held on September 9 and 10, 2025, under the chairmanship of Distinguished Senator Dr. Olanrewaju Tejuoso.

According to the breakdown, 58 lecturers were promoted to the rank of Professor, while 46 others attained the position of Associate Professor. The promotions cut across diverse fields including agriculture, clinical sciences, engineering, theatre arts, Islamic studies, mathematics, statistics, nursing, and allied health sciences.

Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Mathew Adamu, congratulated the newly elevated staff, describing the exercise as the largest single batch of professorial promotions in the institution’s history. He said the recognition underscored the university’s commitment to academic excellence, research, and mentorship.

Adamu noted that the milestone reflected management’s renewed focus on rewarding scholarship and building capacity for the university’s growth. He assured that the institution’s stable academic environment would continue to foster greater achievements.
