The United States Department of State has announced a major realignment of its visa operations across Africa, with routine visa services at the U.S. Embassy in Abuja set to end from August 1, 2026, as part of a broader regional restructuring initiative.
The move is aimed at strengthening national security by promoting more uniform screening, vetting and visa adjudication standards across the continent, while improving operational efficiency and aligning visa services with evolving U.S. immigration policy priorities.
Under the new arrangement, several U.S. embassies and consulates across Africa will cease offering routine visa services, with designated regional hubs taking over processing responsibilities.
For Nigeria, the U.S. Consulate in Lagos has been designated as the country’s sole location for routine visa applications.
Consequently, Nigerian citizens and residents seeking U.S. visas will be required to schedule their appointments and pay the applicable visa fees through the U.S. Consulate in Lagos.
The Department of State said the restructuring reflects its long-standing global practice of consolidating visa operations to enhance service delivery, improve consistency in decision-making and strengthen the integrity of the U.S. visa system.
