Usman assumes office as environment ministry permanent secretary

The newly appointed Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Environment, Salihu Aminu Usman, has assumed office, calling for stronger collaboration among staff, agencies and stakeholders to advance Nigeria’s environmental agenda.

Usman made the appeal during a brief handover ceremony at the ministry’s headquarters, stressing that collective commitment and teamwork are essential to effectively implement environmental policies and programmes that support sustainable national development.

He noted that the ministry’s mandate cannot be achieved without coordinated efforts across the environmental sector, adding that stronger partnerships would enhance the delivery of meaningful results.

The Permanent Secretary assured members of staff that he would build on the achievements and institutional frameworks established by his predecessor, while prioritising professionalism, staff development and improved welfare.

According to him, strengthening the capacity and motivation of the workforce will remain key to achieving the ministry’s environmental protection and sustainability objectives.

In his remarks, the outgoing Permanent Secretary, Mahmud Adam Kambari, described the Federal Ministry of Environment as an institution endowed with experienced and dedicated personnel.

He expressed appreciation to the ministry’s management and staff for their support throughout his tenure and urged them to extend the same level of cooperation to the new Permanent Secretary.

Kambari also expressed confidence in Usman’s leadership, describing him as a seasoned professional with strong credentials and the ability to sustain the progress recorded in the ministry.

He further commended the Minister of Environment, Balarabe Abbas Lawal, whom he described as an inspiring leader and mentor whose guidance contributed significantly to the ministry’s achievements during his tenure.

Speaking on behalf of the ministry’s management and staff, the Director of Special Duties, Mrs. Adenopo, thanked Kambari for his leadership and contributions, noting that his tenure witnessed notable milestones that strengthened the ministry’s institutional capacity.

She welcomed Usman to the ministry and assured him of the workforce’s full support and cooperation, expressing confidence that his leadership would consolidate existing gains and guide the ministry toward greater progress in tackling Nigeria’s environmental challenges.
