Wike visits West Africa’s largest quarry, calls for reduction in construction costs

Barr. Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), visited Zeberced Limited Quarry, the largest quarry in West Africa, situated in the Kubwa District of Abuja.

According to the Director of Press Office of the Minister Anthony Ogunleye, the visit, made at the invitation of Ayden Adil Kurt, Managing Director of Zeberced Group, allowed the minister to observe the vast industrial operations at the quarry, which includes the production of gravel, stone dust, and asphalt. Minister Wike praised the company’s commitment to the project and was particularly impressed by the scale of the work.

During the visit, Barr. Wike questioned why contractors in the FCT continue to quote high construction costs when essential materials are locally available. “The raw material is here. I wonder why contractors still talk about the cost of aggregate as if these are imported. They are not,” he remarked, stressing that construction costs in the FCT should not be exorbitant.

The minister also acknowledged the environmental concerns associated with the quarry but noted that Zeberced Group has adhered to the required environmental standards, according to the company’s environmental impact assessment.

In addition to its quarry operations, Zeberced Group is also working on expanding the access road to the Abuja Industrial Park at the Idu Industrial District. Wike confirmed the government’s support for the project, announcing that he had already initiated efforts to secure tax credits for the company to complete a dual-carriageway expansion, a project managed by Salini Construction Company.

The quarry, which has a production capacity of 3,000 tons per hour, employs over 800 workers, contributing significantly to local employment and infrastructure development.
