A prominent youth leader, Dr. Raymond Edoh, has called on the Federal Government to extend the tenure of the Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Adewale Adeniyi, following his recent appointment as Chairperson of the World Customs Organisation (WCO).
Describing the appointment as a historic milestone, Dr. Edoh said it marks the first time a Nigerian has been elected to lead the WCO, the highest global decision-making body in customs administration. He noted that failing to retain Adeniyi in office could cost Nigeria and Africa the strategic benefits of his leadership at the WCO.
“This is a glory for Nigeria and Africa. If his tenure is not extended, we risk losing this influential position in global customs,” Edoh said. “I urge the Federal Government to extend his tenure so Nigeria and the continent can fully benefit from this landmark achievement.”
Congratulating Adeniyi, Edoh praised his dedication, innovation, and leadership within the Nigeria Customs Service, expressing confidence that he would make the WCO proud.
“Adeniyi’s election reflects international confidence in his ability to drive reforms in customs cooperation, trade facilitation, and border security,” he stated. “His commitment to digital transformation and tackling illicit trade aligns with global customs goals.”
Edoh highlighted Adeniyi’s track record of reforms, including modernisation of customs procedures, reduction of trade barriers, and improved revenue generation. He added that these accomplishments resonate with the aspirations of Nigerian youth and position the country as a rising force in global trade policy.
He also pointed out that Adeniyi’s leadership comes at a time when global trade systems need resilience amid disruptions from pandemics and geopolitical tensions. “Strong leadership is essential, and Adeniyi’s election is a timely step towards stability in global trade,” Edoh said.
Calling for broad support from stakeholders, including government agencies, private sector players, and civil society, Edoh emphasized the importance of collaboration to maximise the gains of Adeniyi’s leadership at the WCO.
Dr. Raymond Edoh is a well-known youth advocate and champion of sustainable development in Nigeria. Through various initiatives, he has consistently promoted youth inclusion in governance and national development.
