Zulum opens 48-classroom Almajiri school, targets 1m jobs with Lake Chad project

Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, on Friday inaugurated a 48-classroom Integrated High Islamic College in Baga, Kukawa Local Government Area, designed to give almajirai access to formal education, Islamic studies, and vocational skills.

Zulum said the initiative was central to his administration’s drive to tackle illiteracy and insecurity, stressing that subjects like Mathematics and English would be introduced to enable students sit for national examinations and pursue tertiary education. He also announced a daily school feeding programme to boost retention.

The governor noted that the Baga school is one of about 20 such integrated institutions built across Borno to transform the lives of out-of-school children. The state government has provided free uniforms, books, bags, and dignity kits, while 23 teachers from the local community have been engaged.

In a separate development, Zulum inspected the Baga–Chad Water Clearance Project, which is in its final phase. The project aims to reopen waterways between Baga and Lake Chad by clearing silt and invasive plants, creating opportunities in agriculture, fishing, and cross-border trade.

The governor projected that the initiative would generate over one million jobs and revive socio-economic activities. “This will be a game changer for livelihoods, trade, and wealth creation in Borno,” he said, while commending the federal government and security agencies for their support.
