In a meeting held at the State House in Abuja, the leadership of the Nigerian Labour Congress, headed by President Comrade Joe Ajaero, and the Trade Union Congress, led by Comrade Festus Usifo, engaged with President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday evening. The discussions were fruitful and candid.
During the meeting, Special Adviser to the President on Special Duties, Communications, and Strategy, Dele Alake, expressed confidence in President Tinubu’s ability to facilitate open and sincere consideration of the issues raised by the Labour Movement. As a result, the Labour Leaders made a decision to suspend further protests.
Instead, they opted for constructive engagement with the government to address all outstanding concerns affecting the welfare of the working people and Nigerians in general.
One significant outcome of the meeting was President Tinubu’s commitment to the Labour leaders that the Port Harcourt refineries would resume production by December 2023, following the completion of the ongoing rehabilitation contract between the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL) and the Italian firm, Maire Tecnimont SpA.
President Tinubu assured the Labour leaders that he would continue working in the best interest of Nigeria. He earnestly appealed to them to collaborate with him in the pursuit of a better and more economically prosperous nation.
