President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Wednesday convened a meeting with leaders of various labour unions at the State House in Abuja. The meeting comes in the wake of nationwide protests initiated by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) over the removal of petrol subsidy without sufficient palliative measures in place.
The protests, led by NLC and TUC, have expressed concerns about the potential impact on the cost of living for citizens, especially the vulnerable sections of society. In response to these concerns, the meeting was organized to provide an avenue for the labour leaders to voice their grievances, engage in negotiations, and present their demands for appropriate palliative measures that can help ease the economic burdens on the people.
Among the attendees at the meeting were Mele Kyari, the group chief executive officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL); Joe Ajaero, the NLC president; Seyi Makinde, the governor of Oyo state; Festus Osifo, the TUC president; and Dele Alake, the special adviser to the president on special duties, communication, and strategy, along with other officials.
The discussions at the meeting aimed to address the pressing concerns of the labour unions and explore potential solutions that can help mitigate the impact of the subsidy removal on the citizens’ livelihoods. The engagement between the government and the labour leaders is an essential step towards finding a balanced approach that takes into account the welfare of the people while also addressing economic challenges.
