Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has warned the Economic Community of West Africa (ECOWAS) to refrain from resorting to military hostilities as a means to resolve the leadership crisis in Niger Republic
In a press statement that he personally signed, Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar issued a stern warning to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) against resorting to military hostilities as a means to address the leadership crisis in Niger Republic. He expressed concern over the escalating tension in the West Africa sub-region due to military intervention and the international attention it has drawn to the neighboring country.
Atiku highlighted the increasing number of states in the subregion that have experienced military interventions in the past three years, making the current situation in Niger even more worrisome. He emphasized that Nigeria, being a key player in the sub-region, is expected to play a leading role in ensuring that the crisis of political leadership in Niger is not only contained but also resolved through the restoration of democratic governance.
The former Vice President commended the efforts of ECOWAS so far in addressing the crisis but emphasized that military hostilities should be avoided. Instead, he stressed the importance of diplomatic engagements and sustained channels for dialogue in resolving the crisis.
Atiku acknowledged that the current situation poses significant challenges for the West African region, but he emphasized that any actions taken to address the crisis in Niger should prioritize democracy as the ultimate goal. He urged the military insurrectionists in Niger to understand that the world cannot wait indefinitely for the crisis to be resolved peacefully.
Atiku’s statement called for a united effort from ECOWAS and other regional stakeholders to pursue a peaceful resolution to the crisis in Niger Republic, with democracy prevailing as the ultimate victor in the process.
