The Nigeria Police Force has achieved notable progress in the investigation concerning the tragic events that transpired in Ughelli, Delta State, on February 23rd and 26th, 2024. During these incidents, officers engaged in fact-finding and rescue missions were ambushed, resulting in the unfortunate demise of six policemen, with six others currently unaccounted for.
In a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer at Force Headquarters, Abuja, Assistant Commissioner of Police Olumuyiwa Adejobi disclosed that, through concerted investigative endeavors, the police have apprehended eight individuals suspected of involvement in the brutal ambush attacks. Initially, five suspects were taken into custody shortly after the incidents. Subsequently, three additional suspects were apprehended at different locations, facilitated by information obtained from the initial detainees. This brings the total number of arrests to eight.
Adejobi emphasized that the arrested suspects are presently under custody and are cooperating with the ongoing investigation. He reaffirmed the Nigeria Police Force’s unwavering commitment to ensuring swift and decisive justice for all perpetrators of such reprehensible acts.
Furthermore, Adejobi conveyed the Police Force’s profound sorrow over the appalling violence inflicted upon officers who were diligently fulfilling their duty to safeguard and serve the community. The Force extends its heartfelt condolences to the families of the fallen officers during this challenging period.
He reiterated that those responsible for the officers’ deaths, as well as other similar atrocities, have disrupted the peace and will be brought to justice. Adejobi assured that the suspects will be subjected to due legal process, supported by credible evidence, once investigations are concluded.
