The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) is deeply saddened to announce the tragic passing of Customs Assistant II Auwal Haruna, who lost his life in the line of duty.
In a statement National Public Relations Officer Chief Superintendent of Customs Abdullahi Maiwada said the unfortunate incident unfolded at the Gamji Makaho checkpoint in the Dankama area of Katsina State on the morning of April 17, 2024.
He said the altercation arose when a team of customs officers from the Katsina Area Command attempted to intercept a convoy of over fifty vehicles suspected of illicitly transporting goods across the country’s borders. Displaying remarkable courage, Haruna and his colleagues engaged in their duty to combat these economic saboteurs. Regrettably, their actions led to a confrontation with an enraged mob, resulting in the brutal assault and tragic death of CA II Auwal Haruna.
Maiwada said the personnel has since been laid to rest in accordance with Islamic rites in his hometown of Kayawa, under the Dutsi Local Government Area of Katsina State.
The Comptroller General of Customs (CGC), Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, along with the entire NCS community, extends heartfelt condolences to the family of CA II Auwal Haruna. The CGC vehemently condemns the senseless violence that claimed the life of this dedicated officer and pledges a thorough investigation into the incident to ensure justice is served.
Emphasizing the perilous challenges faced by officers in safeguarding the nation’s borders, the CGC assures unwavering support for the fallen officer’s family during this period of profound grief.
The NCS reaffirms its steadfast commitment to combating illegal activities such as smuggling, prioritizing Nigeria’s border integrity while ensuring the safety of both citizens and dedicated customs personnel.
