Edo State Governor Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has attributed the worsening socio-economic difficulties afflicting the nation to the federal government’s failure to fulfill its obligations. Addressing the press in Benin City, Obaseki expressed deep concern over the deplorable condition of federal roads within the state. He urgently called for measures to rectify the situation and alleviate the hardships endured by commuters and citizens.
The governor described the state of these roads as distressing, citing his recent journey through the federal roads connecting Uromi in Esan South East to Agbor in Delta State. He recounted witnessing a distressing scene of over 1,000 trailers laden with goods stranded due to the poor road conditions.
“I recently traveled through the federal roads linking Uromi in Edo State to Agbor in Delta State and was confronted with a disheartening sight of nearly 1,000 trailers immobilized on those dilapidated Federal Government roads,” Obaseki stated. In contrast, he emphasized the efficiency of Edo State’s internal roads, where traversing from Igueben to Ujogba to Ugoneki took only a matter of minutes.
Obaseki further highlighted, “The present predicament is rooted in the shortcomings of the Central Government. The extensive road network in Edo, which should be a boon, has turned into a liability. These Federal Government roads in Edo serve as vital connections spanning various parts of the country, yet they remain in an abysmal state.”
He underscored the crucial role of Edo State’s roadways in linking the nation from West to East and North to South, emphasizing that the state serves as a gateway for interregional travel. Regrettably, Obaseki pointed out, the existing federal roads within Edo State have deteriorated due to the central government’s lack of action.
In conclusion, Governor Obaseki’s message resonated with the urgent need for the federal government to address the dire condition of roads in Edo State. He illuminated how these roads play a pivotal role in connecting the nation’s regions, highlighting the current state of neglect and emphasizing the necessity for immediate intervention.
