The Muslim Ummah of South West Nigeria (MUSWEN) has donated N50 million to aid victims of the recent devastating floods in Maiduguri and surrounding areas. The donation was presented to the Borno State Government by a four-member delegation led by MUSWEN President, Alhaji Rasaki Oladejo.
The delegation, which included Prof. Muslih ‘Tayo Yahya, Executive Secretary of MUSWEN, as well as Alhaji Y.K.O. Abdulkareem and Alhaji Murisiku Abidemi Siyanbade, visited Maiduguri to offer their condolences and support to the affected communities. They were received by the Borno State Deputy Governor, Alhaji Umar Usman Kadafur, who accepted the donation on behalf of Governor Babagana Zulum.
During the visit, Oladejo expressed solidarity with the people of Borno, noting the severity of the flood’s impact, which has exacerbated an already dire situation in the region. “The disaster, which struck at a critical time, has worsened the existing food and nutrition crisis in the North East,” he said.
In addition to damaging vital infrastructure such as hospitals, schools, roads, and bridges, the floods caused immense hardship to residents who are still recovering from years of insurgency.
The delegation also visited the Shehu of Borno, Alhaji (Dr.) Abubakar Garbai Al-Amin El-Kanemi, where Oladejo reiterated MUSWEN’s commitment to standing in solidarity with the affected people. “We feel your pain; we stand with you in this difficult time, and our thoughts are with those affected by the flood disaster,” he said, quoting the Qur’an on the unity of Muslims.
Oladejo also commended the Borno State Government’s efforts in managing the crisis and expressed hope that the donation would help alleviate some of the suffering faced by the victims. The MUSWEN leader concluded with prayers for peace and recovery for Maiduguri and Nigeria as a whole.
