Youth delegates urge swift action on pandemic preparedness at global model WHO summit

The first in-person Global Model WHO (GMWHO) concluded at the WHO headquarters in Geneva, gathering over 350 youth delegates from 52 countries. Organized by the World Federation of United Nations Associations (WFUNA) and the World Health Organization, the event offered a realistic simulation of the World Health Assembly, where young leaders tackled critical global health challenges.

During the summit, delegates worked together to draft resolutions on issues like climate change, antimicrobial resistance, mental health, and polio eradication. The event’s highlight was the adoption of a declaration pressing WHO Member States to finalize a global Pandemic Agreement this year. “Only through coordinated action can we protect the lives, well-being, and futures of our generation,” the declaration stated.

WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus welcomed the delegates, acknowledging their essential role in shaping a resilient and equitable global health landscape. “This generation is instrumental in creating a safer, fairer world,” he said. WFUNA Secretary-General Aziel Goulandris also commended the delegates, affirming, “Today’s declaration showcases the power of youth voices in global decision-making, strengthening WHO’s mission and advancing equity for all.”

GMWHO Director-General Savannah Jamora highlighted the conference’s unique impact, saying, “Young people are essential partners in global health, bringing lived experiences and innovative ideas that ensure responsive, effective policies.”

The Global Model WHO aligns with WHO’s commitment to empowering young people in global health, fostering partnerships, and amplifying youth voices to advance a healthier, more equitable world.
