Tinubu hails Nigerian diaspora as key national asset

President Bola Tinubu has emphasized the vital role of Nigerians abroad, calling them an “indispensable asset” to the country during the 7th Nigeria Diaspora Investment Summit at the State House in Abuja.

In a keynote address delivered by Senator George Akume, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Tinubu outlined the essential contributions of Diasporans, describing them as ambassadors and drivers of excellence who could help propel Nigeria’s economic and developmental goals.

The summit, themed “Adapting Stability through Diaspora Investment: Navigating the Path to Prosperity,” highlighted the significance of small businesses. Tinubu noted that these businesses form the backbone of Nigeria’s economy, being critical to families, communities, and national stability. He reiterated the administration’s commitment to creating a conducive environment for investments from Nigerians abroad.

Acknowledging the Diasporans’ influence in global fields, Tinubu said, “You, our brothers and sisters abroad, are not only a source of pride but hold unique potential in shaping Nigeria’s future. By leveraging your expertise and global networks, we can bridge the development gap and achieve shared prosperity.”

He detailed recent economic reforms, including the removal of fuel subsidies, the naira float, and palliative measures such as the Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) initiative and cash transfers. “These efforts,” he stated, “are aimed at reducing costs, creating jobs, and strengthening the economy.”

On security, Tinubu spoke of initiatives like the N50 billion Pulako Initiative, aimed at fostering peace in conflict-prone areas, and investments in military hardware and drones to combat insurgency. Since these efforts began, thousands of hostages have been freed, and numerous hostile elements neutralized.

The President assured the audience of the government’s commitment to reforming key sectors like finance, ICT, agriculture, and healthcare to attract investments, promising “immense returns” for contributors to the nation’s growth.

Tinubu urged the Diasporans to actively support Nigeria’s development initiatives, asserting that their involvement is essential. Ambassador Rabiu Dagari, Director-General of the Directorate of Technical Cooperation in Africa, echoed this, describing the Diaspora as “a reservoir of talent, resources, and innovation,” instrumental to Nigeria’s long-term prosperity.

Dr. Badewa Adejugbe-Williams, NDIS Coordinator, called the summit “a movement,” urging participants to join in shaping a prosperous Nigeria for current and future generations.
