BYU-Pathway worldwide launches global education centre in Lagos

BYU-Pathway Worldwide has inaugurated a state-of-the-art Global Education Centre in Lagos, Nigeria, to expand access to affordable, high-quality online education through BYU-Idaho and Ensign College.

The initiative provides over 74,000 students in 180 countries with spiritually based, U.S.-accredited degrees that can be completed online in as little as three years. In Nigeria, the total cost of obtaining this education through BYU-Pathway Worldwide is NGN379,579.

Sponsored by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, BYU-Pathway Worldwide aims to develop leaders in their homes, congregations, and communities. Students also benefit from remote internships with global organizations and potential full-time employment opportunities.

At the official opening in Opebi, Ikeja, Elder D. Todd Christofferson of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles highlighted the Church’s commitment to education, noting its annual investment of over $1 billion to support learning opportunities worldwide. He emphasized that online education enables greater access without the high costs associated with physical universities.

Brian K. Ashton, President of BYU-Pathway Worldwide, reinforced the institution’s mission to make education widely accessible, stating that fees are heavily subsidized and scholarships of nearly 50% are available. “This opportunity is open to all, not just Church members. The Church’s goal is to bless lives, not generate profit,” he said.

Elder Adeyinka A. Ojediran, 1st Counselor of the Africa West Area Presidency, linked the initiative to the Church’s efforts to develop individuals spiritually, socially, and professionally. He emphasized the Global Education Centre as a place for learning, leadership development, and community building.

The launch event was attended by dignitaries, including Elder Alfred and Sister Lucie Kyungu, Elder Michael T. and Sister Rosaline Ringwood, Elder Isaac K. and Sister Hannah Morrison, Bishop W. Christopher and Sister Carol Waddell, and senior leaders from BYU-Pathway Worldwide.

BYU-Pathway Worldwide, in partnership with BYU-Idaho and Ensign College, continues to provide accessible and affordable education to students worldwide, fostering personal and professional growth while reinforcing faith-based principles.
