In a sustained effort to combat crude oil theft and illegal refining activities, operatives of Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) DELTA, under the ongoing Operation DELTA SANITY, have discovered and dismantled a large illegal refinery site in Ugbokodo Community, Warri South-West Local Government Area of Delta State.
The operation, which took place on Saturday, April 19, 2025, led to the uncovering of 15 extensive dug-out pits containing an unspecified volume of suspected stolen crude oil. Alongside the pits, the naval personnel also intercepted two large wooden boats and several sacks filled with crude oil and illegally refined Automotive Gas Oil (AGO), popularly known as diesel.
According to a naval spokesperson, the site was systematically deactivated to prevent further environmental degradation and to deter the perpetrators from resuming operations. The illegal refinery site is believed to have been part of a wider network of bunkering activities that have contributed significantly to crude oil losses in the Niger Delta region.

The Navy emphasized that this operation forms part of its renewed strategic efforts to secure the nation’s maritime domain, ensure the sustainability of national oil assets, and support the federal government’s fight against economic sabotage.
“This is a clear demonstration of our unwavering resolve to clamp down on illegal oil activities, protect the environment, and safeguard national assets,” the spokesperson said. “The Nigerian Navy will continue to intensify surveillance and respond swiftly to intelligence on any acts of criminality within the region.”
Operation DELTA SANITY is one of several military-led initiatives designed to restore order in the oil-producing regions of Nigeria, particularly areas vulnerable to pipeline vandalism, illegal refining, and environmental pollution.
Authorities have assured that investigations are ongoing to apprehend those behind the illicit operation, while the seized items will be handed over to relevant agencies for further action.
