Nigeria and Saint Lucia have taken significant steps toward deepening bilateral relations following a high-level meeting between Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, and Saint Lucia’s Minister for External Affairs, International Trade, Civil Aviation, and Diaspora Affairs, Alva Romanus Baptiste.
During the meeting, Tuggar conveyed warm greetings from President Bola Tinubu and expressed appreciation for the hospitality shown to the Nigerian delegation. He emphasized the strong historical and cultural bonds between both nations, rooted in shared African ancestry, the legacy of the transatlantic slave trade, and a common British colonial past.
Tuggar welcomed the anticipated formalization of diplomatic relations, noting that Nigeria’s High Commission in Port of Spain currently provides interim coverage for Saint Lucia. He said the establishment of formal ties would enhance cooperation across bilateral and multilateral platforms, especially within the OECS and CARICOM.
To advance practical collaboration, Tuggar proposed a structured partnership between Nigeria’s Technical Aid Corps (NTAC) and Saint Lucia’s Political & Economic Cooperation Development Division. This would include deploying Nigerian professionals in health, education, and agriculture; exchanging best practices in governance and youth empowerment; and launching joint capacity-building initiatives.
He also called for greater engagement in education diplomacy—through scholarships, academic exchanges, and joint research—as a means of fostering stronger people-to-people connections.
On the economic front, Tuggar expressed Nigeria’s interest in expanding trade and investment in agriculture, tourism, renewable energy, manufacturing, and ICT. He also stressed the need for joint action on climate change adaptation, disaster risk reduction, and access to climate finance, reaffirming Nigeria’s support for Saint Lucia as a Small Island Developing State (SIDS).
Nigeria, he added, remains committed to advancing the interests of Saint Lucia and other SIDS on global platforms such as the United Nations, the Commonwealth, and AU–CARICOM partnerships.
Also present at the meeting were Nigeria’s Minister of Art, Culture, Tourism and Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa, and the Director General of NTAC, Rt. Hon. Yusuf Buba Yakub.
Tuggar concluded by expressing optimism that the evolving Nigeria–Saint Lucia partnership would lead to mutual prosperity and greater regional solidarity.
