The Embassy of Switzerland, in partnership with the Create That Change Development Initiative (CCDI), has commissioned newly constructed toilet and library facilities at LEA Primary School, Sheritti, Kabusa, Abuja, to improve hygiene and promote inclusive learning in public schools across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The initiative is part of CCDI’s Public School Revival Initiative (PSRI) — a flagship programme aimed at enhancing school infrastructure, restoring pupils’ dignity, and fostering a more conducive learning environment in underserved communities.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Mrs. Sharon Ayeni, Executive Director of CCDI, said the project was inspired by the need to address poor infrastructure in public schools and ensure that children have access to safe, clean, and well-equipped learning spaces. “Access to clean toilets is a basic right, not a luxury. Every child deserves to learn in an environment that promotes health, hygiene, and dignity,” Ayeni said.
“Through the PSRI, we are not only building facilities but also nurturing hope and expanding opportunities for young learners.”
Ayeni explained that the PSRI is designed as a long-term intervention to support public education through improved infrastructure, hygiene facilities, and access to learning materials. She revealed that the first phase of the programme, supported by the Swiss Embassy, has delivered four toilet blocks and three well-equipped libraries across selected public schools in the FCT.
She urged government authorities to intensify efforts in maintaining school facilities, lamenting that many public schools still lack basic amenities such as desks, ventilation, and sanitation.
In his remarks, Mr. Siamak Rouhani, Deputy Ambassador of Switzerland to Nigeria, said the partnership reflects Switzerland’s commitment to education and sustainable development in Nigeria. “Education is vital for children’s future. With quality education, they can find jobs, contribute to their communities, and integrate successfully into the labour market,” Rouhani stated.
He added that Switzerland’s long-standing support for basic and vocational education in Nigeria extends through embassy initiatives and partnerships with corporate organizations, emphasizing that the Kabusa project strengthens the foundation for lifelong learning.
The Head Teacher of LEA Primary School, Mrs. Afiniki Shekwagu, expressed gratitude to CCDI and the Swiss Embassy for the intervention, describing it as “a joyful day” for the school community. “For years, our pupils have struggled with inadequate sanitation and limited learning resources. The new toilets and library will not only improve hygiene and learning but also boost morale among teachers and students,” she said.
Shekwagu added that the school has developed a maintenance roster involving pupils to ensure the sustainability of the new facilities.
Representing the FCT Universal Basic Education Board (UBEB), Dr. Salamatu Manjalo commended CCDI for the initiative and assured that the board would conduct periodic inspections to ensure proper use and upkeep of the facilities.
The event featured poetry recitations and songs by pupils in appreciation of the donors.
The Create That Change Development Initiative (CCDI) is a non-governmental organization committed to community empowerment through education, youth development, and social impact programmes. Its Public School Revival Initiative continues to attract support from local and international partners promoting access to quality education for Nigerian children.
