Former Vice President (1999-2007) and the Presidential candidate of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) 2023 elections Atiku Abubakar has called upon the nation to uphold and protect the foundational principles of democratic governance, pointing out the constitutional requirements for those seeking the highest elective office in the land.
In a press conference held today at the Shehu Yar’Adua Centre, Atiku expressed concern that the process of verifying candidates’ credentials should not take excessive time and called for swift, transparent, and efficient mechanisms for confirming the authenticity of educational certificates presented by public office aspirants.
He addressed the nation on critical issues concerning the future of democratic governance and legitimate leadership in Nigeria.
Mr. Abubakar commenced his address by emphasizing the vital role of political leadership and active citizenship in shaping the destiny of the nation. He stressed that the nation’s well-being and global standing are dependent on effective leadership and governance, highlighting the collective responsibility of leaders to advance the interests of the people and the nation.
Reflecting on the historical context, he recalled the struggles of his generation to restore democratic governance and return the military to the barracks. Mr. Abubakar underscored the importance of adherence to constitutional rules and the rule of law, asserting that the legitimacy of leadership and government in Nigeria is derived from the constitution.
Mr. Abubakar emphasized that the integrity of the electoral process and the reputation of Nigeria on the global stage are at stake, and this has far-reaching consequences for all Nigerians, both at home and abroad. As a dedicated democrat and patriot, he reiterated his commitment to the country and its constitution.
Acknowledging the collaborative effort of legal experts in Nigeria and the United States in clarifying these longstanding issues, Mr. Abubakar expressed his gratitude to Nigerian citizens and international well-wishers for their patience and support during the quest for facts and truth.
He paid tribute to the late human rights activist, Chief Gani Fawehinmi, SAN, whose dedication to this cause inspired the pursuit of clarity and justice over the past 23 years. Mr. Abubakar cited Gani’s vindication as a testament to the enduring power of truth and its ability to prevail over falsehood.
Quoting former American President Thomas Jefferson, Mr. Abubakar underscored the crucial role of journalism in upholding democracy and uncovering political deceit. He commended the efforts of independent journalists, particularly David Hundeyin, and the multitude of Nigerian youths and citizen journalists who tirelessly expose the truth and hold leaders accountable.
Mr. Abubakar clarified that this endeavor is not about his personal interests but rather a quest for truth, morality, and accountability in public affairs. He called upon all Nigerians, regardless of their affiliations, to join him in the mission to uphold probity, accountability, and the principles of justice, morality, and integrity in the country’s governance.
