FG trains envoys, targets results-oriented diplomacy

The Federal Government has commenced the formal induction of newly appointed ambassadors and high commissioners-designate, signalling a renewed push for a proactive and results-driven foreign policy.

The orientation programme, which began on Monday in Abuja, is organised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Nigeria to equip the envoys with the requisite skills and strategic direction for their diplomatic assignments.

Speaking at the opening session, the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, described the appointees as key representatives of Nigeria’s image and interests abroad. She noted that their selection reflects the confidence reposed in them by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and carries significant responsibility.

Odumegwu-Ojukwu stated that the envoys are expected to advance Nigeria’s foreign policy priorities, particularly the administration’s “4Ds” framework—Democracy, Development, Demography and Diaspora. She emphasised that diplomacy must transcend protocol to deliver measurable outcomes, especially in attracting foreign investment, promoting trade and boosting tourism.

She also underscored the importance of protecting Nigerians in the diaspora, urging the diplomats to ensure efficient consular services, swift crisis response and sustained engagement with citizens abroad. The minister cautioned against misconduct, stressing that diplomatic privileges must be exercised with discipline, integrity and accountability.

Delivering a keynote address on behalf of the President, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, described the appointments as a “sacred national duty.” He noted that Nigeria’s foreign policy has been recalibrated to prioritise citizen welfare and urged the envoys to deliver tangible outcomes that support national development and enhance the country’s global standing.

Akume further called on the diplomats to uphold professionalism, respect the laws and cultures of host countries, and demonstrate unwavering loyalty to Nigeria.

Representatives of the National Assembly of Nigeria also pledged legislative support for the diplomatic corps, assuring continued oversight and improved funding for foreign missions while emphasising strict compliance with financial regulations and accountability standards.

The induction programme will feature a series of technical sessions covering diplomatic practice, mission administration, economic diplomacy, security coordination and multilateral engagement. It will also address the role of spouses in diplomatic service.

Officials say the initiative underscores the government’s determination to strengthen Nigeria’s diplomatic architecture and ensure its representatives abroad deliver impactful, citizen-focused outcomes.
